PCB123 v5 Feedback

Postby islobodov » Tue Sep 10, 2013 2:29 pm

Just thought I'd make a thread with my impressions with PCB123 v5 that I started using today. I'll add more thoughts as I continue to use it over the coming months.

1) Slots and cutouts.

Definitely nice to have the built in functionality. I would suggest adding a new selection option to select slots and cutouts, separately from other polygons. Also, why the limitation to only circles and quadrilaterals as cutout shapes? This means that for more complex cutout shapes, we still need to use the old system of drawing them in on the mechanical layer and leaving a note.

2) Pin properties.

I like having the additional settings on pin creation. However, it seems like this had an unintended side effect. Previously (in v4), you could change the hole size, pad diameter, platedness, thermals, etc, and have the change take effect with no delay once you press "Ok" in the dialog box. In v5, when you press ok, if the PCB is complex, there will be a significant delay (up to 30+ seconds) while PCB123 processes something, similar to when you disconnect a pin from a net. This delay is very problematic, as I don't know of a workaround, since physical pin properties cannot be modified from the schematic screen.

3) Pin insertion / moving pins delay

The lengthy new delay in v5 also applies to putting in new through holes, or moving existing through holes.

The limit was set by our manufacturing manager to limit the complexity of cutouts submitted directly through the PCB123 software. Any complex routing the cannot be drawn the the PCB123 provided tools should not be submitted through the software. These jobs can then be directed to the appropriate Full Feature or Custom Quote service.

The delays you experience refreshing the layout is likely due to the complexity of the polygons on your layout and not a result of changing a pins properties. At this time the more complex your filled polygons are the longer it takes for PCB123 to draw and redraw them. We are working to improve this for a future release. A work around is to view your polygons in wire frame mode after you drawn them. This should greatly reduce redraw time.

I checked your latest file submission and while I do see some delay when changing pin properties. It wasn't very long, but definitely a delay. I will report the issue to development. I haven't see this type of delay in other board files, but your design is very large a pretty complex. I'm sure that has something to do with it. I'll get back to you with more info once I here from dev.

Thanks for checking into it. The point I wanted to stress, when I opened the same file in pcb123 v4, just before converting it to v5, there was no delay when changing pin properties. So this seems to be a new issue resulting from some of the changes in v5. The PCB file in question seems to be near the limit of what can realistically be drawn and edited in PCB123 in any case, but that particular delay is a new problem.
