Non-rectangular surface mount pads

Postby agutierr » Mon Apr 01, 2013 10:07 pm

I am trying to design a surface mount pad for an LED (recommended solder pad attached), but the shape is not rectangular. In order to create the 0.4x0.5mm additions on the sides, I have to create a new pad and set it adjacent to the 0.5x4.8mm rectangles. This, however, violates minimum spacing requirements between 2 pads. Will ignoring this warning cause them to be merged in manufacturing, or is there another way to go about designing the solder pad?

The solder pad information referenced in you post is missing. How far apart are the pads after the modification?

Let me try the attachment again. I was placing them so that there was no spacing between them, since they are supposed to be a single pad.

It's fine to place the small square pad against the larger rectangular pad. The minimum spacing requirement is to ensure that objects carrying different signals remain separated. The two pads in question are intended to carry the same signal.

@Gautier, It is a single pad and as @sale said, it's ok bcause the theoratical minimum distance between pads is just to avoid signal interference. Also note that if you have already defined the PCB manufacturing machine in the CAD software, it might be reffering to minimum distance between pads that the machine can place. Either ways, it might be a good idea to check what your PCB can or cannot do. In case you'll be ordering them to a vendor, you can simple ask them if this design could be manufactured without any shorts and other issues.
