Can other PCB manufactuers use PCB123 files?

Postby drkirkby » Wed Aug 22, 2012 2:30 am

I'm trying to ascertain if PCB123 can be used to generate file which any decent PCB manufacturer can use, or whether one basically has to get the boards made by Sunstore. Can PCB123 output standard Gerber, NC drill files, and anything else that another PCB manufacturer would use?

I want to avoid "vendor lockin" where one is forced to use one company.

As another point, can you take files that are produced by KiCad?

The .123 file that is created by our PCB123 software is our own format and cannot be used by other manufacturers. You do have the option to purchase the gerber data from your PCB123 design. The following post explains how to do so.

If you are already using KiCad you can generate gerbers from your designs and submit an order for boards through one of our services at the . Please contact customer support if you have questions.

Thank you.

At the moment I don't use any software, though I used Pads and EE Designer about 15 years ago.

But some of us want a power supply PCB made for an old Kenwood TS-940S transceriver, and so we were looking at what software could be used. Someone suggested PCB123, but I think KiCad will be more attractive, as it allows us to shop around more to get the best price for a board to be made.

We need at least 2 oz copper - preferably thicker, as the reason we need these PCBs is the tracks often burn up in the original.

I also note you can make board on Rogers material, which is good to know, as I hae another application which will want one of their boards, though I don't know which one yet.
